Whew....

Last night was hot. There is a huge diesel generator that powers the factory where I am staying. After the employees leave, the generator is turned off; people staying at the factory (currently Tom and I) rely on an inverter/converter hooked up to about 20 large batteries to power the fan at night. Well, the inverter/converter went out last night. Luckily the heat was oppressive enough to knock me out.

Just a few things that happened today:

1. Immigration officials at the airport were too busy watching an Ashton Kutcher movie to help Tom and me with some passport details.

2. I went to the inpatient feeding unit at Justinien Hospital where I saw the smallest child I've ever encountered. I cannot really even describe how tiny she was even though she was probably a few months old... distended belly, a full head of hair, facial expressions and all.

3. I met Bernard, a friend of Meds & Food food for Kids and employee of the Haiti Mission. He drove us on all sorts of errands and introduced me to an interpreter named Judy. She may help me navigate Cap Haitien and complete surveys and interviews. I'll meet another potential interpreter on Monday.

4. I learned how to start the pump that fills the water tanks on the roof of the house. We ran out of water last night too....

5. I developed a throbbing earache.

6. I realized this project and this trip are going to be more difficult than I could have imagined- even with all the warnings I received. Everything happens very, very slowly even though the days are long.

Now I'm going to play Boggle by headlamp.

As is the entire Simmons Clan. Please consider some R & R in Galena upon your return where we'll fatten you & Tom up and force you to drink good wine!
Be safe-
Love, R
